Created in 1840, the "Liqueur de Santé" is the first liqueur made from the original recipe of the Elixir Végétal de la Grande Chartreuse. (The original recipe was perfected by Carthusian monks in 1737 at the Grande Chartreuse monastery, at the behest of a marshal to King Henry IV in 1605. That's a long recipe development!) A closely guarded, proprietary blend of up to 130 roots, herbs and spices is infused for an exceptional digestive liqueur that also lends complexity to many cocktails. Though the company makes a yellow bottle as well, this green bottle is the more aggressively alcoholic of the two. And yes, the name for the color chartreuse is derived from this liqueur!
